Red light therapy benefits: what it does, who uses it, and buying in India

Red light therapy has moved from research labs into clinics, gyms and homes. What the benefits are, what the evidence does and does not say, and how to choose equipment from a supplier in India.

Red light therapy — also called photobiomodulation, or PBM — exposes the skin to red (around 630–660 nm) and near-infrared (around 810–850 nm) light from LEDs. Unlike a tanning bed it uses no ultraviolet, and unlike a sauna its purpose is not heat. It is now one of the fastest-growing services in wellness centres, skin clinics, gyms and sports facilities across India.

This article explains the benefits people use it for, what the research supports, and what to look for when you buy a red light therapy bed or panel in India. It is general information, not medical advice: anyone with a medical condition, who is pregnant, or who takes light-sensitising medication should speak to a doctor first.

How red light therapy works

Cells contain mitochondria, which produce the energy (ATP) the cell runs on. Light in the red and near-infrared range is absorbed by an enzyme in the mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase. The leading explanation in published research is that this absorption helps the mitochondria work more efficiently, which in turn influences how cells repair and how tissue responds to stress.

  • Red light (630–660 nm) is absorbed mostly in the skin, which is why it is used for skin-focused sessions.
  • Near-infrared light (810–850 nm) travels deeper, into muscle and around joints, which is why recovery-focused beds combine both.

Benefits of red light therapy

These are the benefits people most often book red light sessions for. The strength of the evidence varies, and we note where it is strongest.

1. Skin health and appearance

Skin is the most studied area. Studies have reported improvements in the look of fine lines, skin texture and tone with regular sessions, and red light is widely used in dermatology and aesthetic clinics alongside other treatments. This is also where an LED face mask fits.

2. Muscle recovery after training

Sports researchers have studied red and near-infrared light before and after exercise, with many reporting less post-exercise soreness and faster recovery between sessions. That is why recovery centres, sports academies and gyms add full-body beds.

3. Joint comfort and stiffness

People with stiff or aching joints use red light for comfort, and there is research interest in its effect on the inflammation response. It is a complement to physiotherapy and medical care, not a replacement for them.

4. Circulation

Red and near-infrared light are associated with local changes in blood flow in the treated area, which is part of why sessions feel warming and relaxing.

5. Sleep and mood

Many users report feeling relaxed after a session and sleeping better, and evening red light is far gentler on the body clock than bright blue-rich light. The research here is earlier-stage than for skin.

6. Energy and general wellbeing

Because the mechanism centres on cellular energy, red light is popular in longevity and wellness programmes. Treat claims of dramatic results with caution; consistent, regular sessions are what users describe as helpful.

How a session works

  1. The user lies in a full-body bed (or stands in front of a panel) for roughly 10–20 minutes, depending on the device and programme.
  2. Eye protection is provided; the light is bright.
  3. Sessions are typically repeated a few times a week. Results, where people notice them, build over weeks rather than after one session.

Buying red light therapy equipment in India

Most red light beds sold worldwide are designed and manufactured abroad, and international brand websites dominate search results. For a buyer in India, though, the practical questions are local: who imports it, who installs it, who services it when an LED driver fails, and whether the electrical supply in your building suits it.

AAAyan Immunotech is a red light therapy supplier in India, delivering and installing across the country — Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and beyond. We supply full-body red light beds, panels and masks, and handle the site survey, electrical requirements, installation, operator training and after-sales service. Our guide to choosing a red light bed supplier in India lists the questions to ask any supplier, and the red light therapy bed cost guide explains what drives the price.
